The book is written by Coralis, the last of the Wand Masters, who is challenging the reader to take on the task of becoming an apprentice. Each spread is devoted to a separate discipline regarding the craft of wandmaking, including rules to follow, elements to use such as crystals and herbs, developing a workspace, and types of wood to use. Much of the well-researched information, as well as the short stories peppered throughout the book, is based on fact and contains elements of folklore and the natural sciences. In his final word to the apprentice, Coralis ends with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson that summarizes the essence of the book: "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us."
The book contains a few features that make it unique. Envelopes that are bound to the page contain informative cards and letters. A section on astrology has two acetate overlays showing the constellations in both the northern and southern hemispheres. And a pull-out tray contains a wooden wand and materials that can be used to help personalize your wand. But it is the overall design of the book that catches the reader's attention. Once you pick it up, you're hooked!
